“Microsoft's player on Mac”

by Cyril Roger

It's no secret that the Mac platform has never been Microsoft's priority. This is why versions of Microsoft products on Mac are usually way behind their PC counterpart. Windows Media Player is no different. While the PC version is now onto 11, Windows Media Player for Mac is still on 9, and has been so for a couple years, leading us to think it has been abandoned.

Obviously, this means the player is somewhat technologically behind compared to other media players for Mac like Quicktime. It won't handle the latest audio and video codecs and streaming videos will bring with it substantial buffer times. The brushed metal feel, which looked alright a while back, just feels outdated on Leopard.

Windows Media Player 9 does not offer Intel support meaning that only Power PC users will be able to use it.

Don't just thrown Windows Media Player for Mac away though. You'll need it...to play Windows Media Player files (WMA and WMV). Or you can install Flip4Mac.
