Microsoft's defunct Windows Media Player for Mac

Important Note: In 2006, Windows Media Player for Mac was replaced by Flip4Mac featuring Flip Player which is the new Microsoft endorsed official Windows Media Player for Mac. The review here is only for reference and there is no download link. Please download Flip4Mac for the new official Windows Media Player for Mac.

It's no secret that the Mac platform has never been Microsoft's priority. This is why versions of Microsoft products on Mac are usually way behind their PC counterpart. Windows Media Player was no different. While the PC version is now onto 11, Windows Media Player for Mac stopped on version 9 and has now been abandoned. It has been replaced by Flip4Mac which is the Microsoft officially endorsed Windows Media Player for Macs.

Windows Media Player for Mac was always somewhat technologically behind compared to other media players for Mac like Quicktime. It could not handle the latest audio and video codecs and streaming videos resulted in substantial buffer times. The brushed metal feel which looked alright a while back, looked very dated too.

Windows Media Player 9 did not offer Intel support either meaning that only Power PC were able to use it.

Windows Media Player for Mac is no longer available. Please download Flip4Mac instead.

Pointless. It won't even run. Don't waste your time. I was trying to watch my friends project and this was no help at all.

Useless. A useless piece of software. For a mac user this is about 10 steps backward. The biggest problem with it is that it is a Microsoft heavyweight product with all the bells and whistles that no-one wants. And, of course, it won't run on a modern Mac.

Trying for Windows Media Player. I recently upgraded my mac operating system to lion. My windows media player won't run with lion. I thought i'd upgrade my media player. I downloaded it, but i get the message "you can't open the application stuffit expander because powerpc applications are no longer supported." maybe i'm too old, but i can't open the download. Pros: No pros Cons: All cons. I can't get it to run.

In Softonic we scan all the files hosted on our platform to assess and avoid any potential harm for your device. Our team performs checks each time a new file is uploaded and periodically reviews files to confirm or update their status. This comprehensive process allows us to set a status for any downloadable file as follows:

Clean

It’s extremely likely that this software program is clean.

What does this mean?

We have scanned the file and URLs associated with this software program in more than 50 of the world's leading antivirus services; no possible threat has been detected.

Warning

This software program is potentially malicious or may contain unwanted bundled software.

Why is the software program still available?

Based on our scan system, we have determined that these flags are possibly false positives.

What is a false positive?

It means a benign program is wrongfully flagged as malicious due to an overly broad detection signature or algorithm used in an antivirus program.

We’d like to highlight that from time to time, we may miss a potentially malicious software program. To continue promising you a malware-free catalog of programs and apps, our team has integrated a Report Software feature in every catalog page that loops your feedback back to us.

Flag any particular issues you may encounter and Softonic will address those concerns as soon as possible.
